Aside from teal blue and really duochrome nail polish, I think brick, burnt orange and terracotta polishes are some of my favorite.

A few months ago, in the depths of fall, I finally treated myself to colors like Playing Koi and Row With the Flow from Essie, along with a few other similar colors I thought I’d show you today, in case you’d like to compare them.

I’ve already written the same kind of guide to purple nail polish, duochrome blue, and some of the most popular sheer Essie nail polishes, should you want to check that out.

But today, for some gorgeous burnt orange shades perfect to match with lipsticks like MAC Marrakesh, these are my favorite picks from the drugstore.

Referenced in this guide/swatch post are the following brick and terracotta nail polish colors:

  • Essie Playing Koi
  • Monoprix MakeUp Le Vernis Glow 7 Orange
  • Essence Brick or Treat
  • Mavala 972 Pretty Copper
  • Orly Rustic Root

Why Did I Buy These Terracotta Nail Polish Colors?

The very nail polish that triggered my love for terracotta nails is Essie Playing Koi, and that’s also the first one I got out of the bunch.

I then realized that Orly had recently released its Rustic Root nail polish, and then, without really looking for them, I came across the Mavala, Essence and Monoprix Makeup nail polishes in similar shades.

Two out of the five colors shown today are shimmery, Orly Rustic Root and Mavala Pretty Copper – the other three are completely lacquered and absolutely gorgeous for winter or fall nails.

Essie Playing Koi Swatch

drugstore Brick and Terracotta Nail Polish Swatches - essie playing koi

One of the most beautiful burnt orange slash brick polishes you could get from Essie, Playing Koi is actually not as popular as shades like Mademoiselle, Allure or Lady Like – but it’s oh, so pretty!

Two coats are enough to get Playing Koi to full opacity; it is swatched here with three coats as I like the plumping effect that three coats give my nails when they’re short.

Monoprix MakeUp Le Vernis Glow 7 Orange Swatch

Monoprix Makeup is a French makeup brand you can find at the Monoprix stores – they’ve only released their makeup and nail polish collection some time ago, but the two nail polishes I have from the brand are incredible.

Here is Le Vernis Glow in 7 Orange swatched with three coats – two are more than enough for full opacity, and the color is slightly brighter than the aforementioned Essie nail polish.

Essence Brick or Treat Swatch

I can’t rave enough about the Essence nail polishes – I have about 20 different shades and Brick or Treat is one of my favorites: the gel effect is absolutely stunning, and they’re really long lasting.

Brick or Treat is more brown than the Monoprix Makeup Vernis Glow, and just a bit more of a burnt orange than Essie Playing Koi.

It’s swatched here with three coats, but one to two coats are enough to fully cover the nail.

Mavala 972 Pretty Copper Swatch

The Mavala nail polishes are some I really like.

The only downside is their small size as I like the bigger bottles from Essie, Orly or OPI that allow me to wear them pretty much endlessly and create new nail designs without overthinking whether I’m wasting product or not.

972 Pretty Copper is opaque in one to two coats, more copper indeed than actual terracotta, and a gorgeous metallic nail polish to wear during the fall and winter alongside purple or black for contrast.

Orly Rustic Root Swatch

I hardly think there’s a prettier terracotta nail polish out there than Rustic Root – I don’t have many Orly nail polishes, about a dozen, and this one clearly is my favorite.

A gorgeous mix of orange, brown and red with subtle shimmer, Rustic Root is opaque in just one coat and so long lasting I can never believe it: a true must-have if you love brick/burnt orange nail polish!

These are but some of the colors I’ve been loving lately; if you’ve been here before, you’ve been able to follow my color obsessions as they change during the year, and terracotta is one of my latest loves.

However, if you’d like to try something a bit different, why not check out my guides to periwinkle blue nail polishes, or duochrome pink for in-your-face nails?

Of course, if you love more toned-down shades, make sure you discover all the pretty nude and brown nail polish colors I love from the drugstore!
