When you’re starting out in makeup, the likeliness of buying from drugstore makeup brands is quite high – you don’t really know what’s good, out there, and you’re often not sure what colors and textures will suit you.

One of my favorite brands to get affordable and really performant makeup products is Essence Cosmetics, sister brand to Catrice, both great German makeup brands with a slightly different vibe – where Catrice is more elegant, Essence is more playful.

Essence Cosmetics is renowned for their Gel Nail Colour nail polish range, which I love and have about 20 colors of (all waiting to get reviewed, but you can see some of them in my nail designs Muted Bubbles and Matte Florals).

Essence is also great when it comes to colorful eye pencils and eyeliners; whether you’re looking for a blue, green, silver or burgundy eyeliner, you’ll find it in this brand.

Best Essence Makeup Products: Lash Princess Mascara

Retailing at only around 3/4 euros depending on where you get it, the Essence Lash Princess Mascara is available in simple black and waterproof – the Curl & Volume mascara is one I love to get my almost-straight-lashes to look curlier.

Here’s what Essence says about the Lash Princess Curl & Volume mascara:

The true highlight is the peanut-shaped brush. Similar to the shape of a peanut, the fibre brush is narrow in the middle and wider at the ends. This provides the lashes on the outer and inner corners of the eye with extra texture and makes them look even fuller – for a perfect curl and fantastic volume.

Another great mascara from Essence I’ve been loving for years is the I Love Extreme Waterproof mascara, which boasts a much larger brush – just as good when I know I might have allergies, cry, or just want the mascara to stay put all day.

Best Essence Makeup Products: Gel Nail Colour Nail Polish

Retailing at around 2 euros depending on the store/website you get them, the Essence nail polishes from the Gel Nail Colour range are simply, simply great and really stick to that gel-like formula consistently.

Whether you want a red, blue, green or mauve nail polish, you’ll find it in this range, which offers over 60 different colors.

Nude to Know and The Final Rose and some of my current favorites; gorgeous nude nail polishes that dry fast and are very long lasting.

Best Essence Makeup Products: Hydra Matte Lipstick

Vegan and cruelty-free, the Essence Hydra Matte Lipstick is one of the best drugstore lipstick collections you’ll find on the market at such an affordable price – around 3 euros apiece for some gorgeous red, pink and nude lipsticks.

The formula, which includes shea butter, sunflower oil and hyaluronic acid, leaves the lips softly matte (a little bit like the MACximal Lipsticks from MAC) and utterly pigmented.

And since I’m not mentioning the Essence 8h Matte Comfort Lip liners or any other Essence lip liners in this guide (still working on the reviews and swatches at the moment), if you’re ever looking for a waterproof drugstore lip liner, get yourself a couple of the 8h matte lip liners.

They literally don’t budge ever, and blend with the Hydra Matte lipsticks to perfection for everyday lip combos.

Best Essence Makeup Products: Liquid Ink Eyeliner Waterproof

If you’re ever looking for a great, affordable, drugstore waterproof black eyeliner, then the Essence Liquid Ink Eyeliner Waterproof is one of the best I’ve tried.

Provided you like liquid black eyeliners, you’ll find the ultra-fine tip to the Liquid Ink Eyeliner is really easy to handle and gives very precise strokes with a super pigmented finish that just doesn’t budge at all.

Best Essence Makeup Products: Stay & Play Gel Eyeliner

If, however, you’d rather have a waterproof eyeliner that comes in a pencil format, then the Stay & Play Gel Eyeliner range is another one of the Essence makeup products that performs very well considering the price point.

Not only are the Stay & Play Gel eyeliners ultra-pigmented and glidey-glidey, but they also comes in lots of colors, from blue eyeliners to green, brown, nude, and even a white eyeliner that doesn’t smudge or budge once set.

Best Essence Makeup Products: All About Matt Fixing Compact Powder

I recently told you about some of my staple makeup products, and told you that one of my favorite translucent powders is the RCMA The Original No-Color Powder; comes in a large bottle of 85 g and retails for just a little under $15.
