If you’d told me, years ago, that the time would come when I would be utterly in love with the MAC Lustreglass lipstick range, I’d have laughed.

I used to only really love the very matte MAC lipsticks, with statement colors like Marrakesh or Heroine, and over time, as I spent more time working at MAC Cosmetics, I actually started to understand the hype around the brand’s sheer lipsticks.

If you’ve been here before, you may have noted that the same thing happened with nail polish, too.

I used to only love very opaque, bright and dark colors, and recently found myself loving sheer nail polish, mauve, nude and brown polishes too.

Well – today’s about four of the most popular MAC lipsticks from the Lustreglass range; Thanks It’s MAC, Hug Me, Business Casual, and See Sheer, which I love, love, and love a bit more.

If you’re interested in the Lustreglass lipstick range from MAC, you’ll find this sheer, balm-like texture with a buildable color formula is quite interesting to have.

Here’s how this review is structured:

  • What makes the Lustreglass lipsticks different
  • MAC Lustreglass lipstick swatches
  • Are the Lustreglass lipsticks worth buying (again)?

MAC Lustreglass Lipsticks: What Makes Them Different?

Here’s what MAC Cosmetics says about the Lustreglass lipstick range:

A lightweight, raspberry seed- and organic extra-virgin olive oil-infused lipstick that delivers sheer and shiny colour with a long-wearing, lustrous finish.

These currently retail for $27 apiece for 3 g of product, making the Lustreglass lipsticks some of the most expensive from the brand, along with the Powder Kiss lipsticks.

What makes them different is their highly moisturizing effect, the easily buildable color, the wide range of colors, from colorful to dark, red and nude lipsticks, their scent, and how well they last despite their hydrating power.

What makes them different for me personally is that the Lustreglass lipsticks are great to wear on top of MAC lip liners, not to make them last longer, but to have both colors mix and give a third, personalized color – something harder to get with a matte lipstick.

Here’s how MAC Cosmetics describes each of the lipsticks swatched here:

The Thanks It’s MAC lipstick (click to read the review) is one of the most nude lipsticks from MAC at the moment, a gorgeous mauve pink with cool-to-warm undertones depending on the lighting that can be worn to contrast red, burgundy, green or blue eyeliners alike.

It’s a shade that I, as a fair olive skinned person, love wearing, especially with lip liners like Soar or Plum, although Thanks It’s MAC is so nude that you can easily make it work with most lip liner shades.

And, if you don’t want to splurge, I’ve found the Kiko Smart Fusion lip liners and the Barry M lip liners to be also great.

Hug Me is more of a light nude brown lipstick of the kind that will suit warm skin, medium and dark skin tones even better than Thanks It’s MAC would.

Business Casual, then, is more of a reddish brown nude lipstick that medium skin and dark skin can wear effortlessly – I, with olive skin, often wear bronzer to make this warm shade work better on my skin.

And then, See Sheer – if you’re ever looking for a great, great, great summer lipstick from MAC, See Sheer is a shade that keeps on giving, with all kinds of red, pink and coral undertones to it.

I love wearing See Sheer with a darker brown lip liner like Mahogany, since the undertone is warm, and let both colors mix throughout the day to give a warm brown lip color with coral undertones – gorgeous!

MAC Lustreglass Lipsticks: Worth Buying Again?

If you’re looking for a matte lipstick, the Lustreglass lipsticks definitely are not the ones.

Much creamier than the MACximal Silky Matte lipsticks, much shinier, with less of a lasting power, they’re simply the more fun version of a lipstick, with shades that make our lips look healthy.

The texture stays comfortable throughout the day, and the only downside, really, is that their texture doesn’t allow for the Lustreglass lipsticks to be used as blushes, as I so often do with MACximal, matte, and Powder Kiss lipsticks.

If given the opportunity to buy these again, I would in a heartbeat, and have a few more shades on my MAC bucket list like Succumb to Plum that I’d love to try, and that was released well after I stopped working for MAC.

What’s really fun and interesting about the MAC Lustreglass lipsticks is how versatile and flexible they are.

I’ll actually often wear them without any lip liner underneath to get a colored lip balm effect on with some shine, when I don’t want to wear lipgloss.

However, more often than not, I’ll just try out new lip combos using a darker lip liner underneath.

For instance, See Sheer with Auburn or Mahogany, or Thanks It’s MAC with Chestnut or Soar, or even Hug Me with Spice or Chicory…

The possibilities are endless.

Until next time!
