Well, this review/guide (however you want to call it) has been in the works for months.
Months.
I’ve always been fascinated by the overly popular Essie nail polish brand.
I’ve been fascinated by their countless collections, always well-crafted, with gorgeous six-color ranges released regularly.
The little colorful bottles from the Essie Original collection are some I’ve seen since I was a kid, pretty much, and as soon as I started seriously beauty blogging, I decided the time had come for me to try it again.
I still remember my very first color, one of the brightest pink nail polishes from Essie you’ve ever seen, Haute in the Heat, not too dissimilar to Watermelon – perfect for spring and summer nails!
ESSIE NAIL POLISH SWATCH FEST: 30+ Sheer, Nude, Bright and Dark Colors
Sadly, and as I told you a while ago, I got my phone stolen with thousands of makeup and nail polish swatches on it a few weeks ago, and lost many swatches of Essie nail polishes I’d been working on.
Ugh.
That’s why nail polishes like Offbeat Chic, Go Overboard, Forever Yummy, Licorice, Marshmallow or Bikini So Teeny are not shown here, but as soon as I’m able to take swatch pictures again, I will edit this post.
For the purposes of this little guide, that I’ve crafted to help you choose your new favorite blue, mauve or sheer Essie polishes, I’ve split it into several parts.
For each of the nail polishes, I will also paste the description made by this overly famous drugstore nail polish brand, add the collection and date in which it was first released where possible, and link to more swatches and specific reviews I might already have published in case you want to see more.
Light, Sheer and Nude Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie Not Just a Pretty Face Swatch
an eternal manicurist and fashion stylist favorite, this classic pale pink nail polish is graced with a subtle, sheer finish.
First Released: I Dream in Color collection (Summer 2009)
Not Just a Pretty Face is a gorgeous sheer nail polish with soft peach undertones.
While it’s described as a pale pink, it’s indeed warmer-toned than colors like Sugar Daddy, Mademoiselle or Vanity Fairest.
Since Not Just a Pretty Face is a sheer color, I find that one coat is enough for quick manis or to create contrasting nail art designs on top, but two to three coats show the peachier side of the color better.

Essie Ballet Slippers Swatch
an eternal manicurist and fashion stylist favorite, this classic pale pink nail polish is graced with a subtle, sheer finish.
First Released: ?
Ballet Slippers is another one of the sheer Essie nail polishes I love a lot, and if Ballet Slippers and Mademoiselle are often compared, this one boasts a much whiter base.
Two coats and you’re good to go with a clean mani perfect to contrast heavy makeup looks using blue, red or burgundy eyeliners and other fall lipsticks.

Essie Blanc Swatch
brush on the perfect french manicure tip with ease. full coverage, pure snowy white nail polish creates an elegant, smooth line every time.
First Released: 1981
White nail polish isn’t the easiest to apply, nor to wear – but it’s one of my favorite colors to wear on my nails alongside teal blue, periwinkle/lavender and reddish brown nail polishes.
Essie Blanc is part of the core collection; I’m talking about the first nail polishes ever released by the brand in 1981 – gorgeously opaque in about three coats.

Essie Dance Til Dawn Swatch
let this muted gray white vegan nail polish with pink undertones give you the endorphin rush you need to dance ’til dawn.
First Released: Step Out of Line collection (Fall 2023)
A dirty light pink nail polish with strong grey undertones is what we have with Dance Til Dawn, released in the Step Out of Line collection alongside colors like Full Blast and Meet Me at Midnight back in 2023.
Opaque in about three coats, Dance Til Dawn offers another take on classic white, and matches mauve nail polish like Lady Like, Angora Cardi or Clothing Optional to perfection for sophisticated nail designs.

Essie Limo-Scene Swatch
step out in style with spotlight-stealing, sheer pastel pink polish. silky, chiffon-soft color creates posh and simply flawless nail.
First Released: Madison Avenue collection (Spring 2004)
Like Allure it’s so often compared to, Limo-Scene is a sheer nail polish, although it has a pink undertone to it, where Allure is warmer-toned.
One or two coats are enough to get a gorgeous result with Limo-Scene.
I love pairing this one with metallic nail polishes to create some contrast: some favorites, at the moment, are Buy Me a Cameo, or, from other brands, the Barry M Glazed Sheer range, or the Nails Inc polishes from the duochrome Euphoria Highlight collection.

Essie Allure Swatch
this sheer nail polish with a natural finish is a favorite of brides everywhere. perfect for a french manicure or an alluring nail look.
First Released: Summer Balls collection (Summer 2002)
With its sheer formula and beige undertone, Allure is one of the most popular Essie nail polishes, and it’s easy to understand why: one or two coats, and you’re good to go anywhere with extra-elegant nails.
Where Limo-Scene is more suitable for cool skin, neutral and olive skin, Allure feels more suitable for warm skin – and great with a red nail polish with coral undertones for arty nail designs!

Essie Mademoiselle Swatch
say bonjour to the most classic, grown-up pink. award-winning and eternally trendy, this sheer nail polish is beloved by all.
First Released: ?
Mademoiselle is not only one of the best selling Essie colors, but also one of my favorites: I’ve almost run out!
Opaque in three to four coats, Essie’s Mademoiselle is better worn with two or three coats and beautiful to contrast colors like purple or deep blue on the eyes.

Essie Vanity Fairest Swatch
mirror, mirror on the wall, what’s the fairest polish of them all? my lady, this sheer iridescent pastel pink nail polish is the one.
First Released: Bare Necessities collection (Spring 2005)
Oscillating between beige and pink, Vanity Fairest is one of the only sheers from Essie that also boasts iridescence – in the daylight, you can clearly see the tiny little sparkles catching the light.
Perfect for pretty much any occasion (except if you’re looking for nail polish colors for Christmas!), Vanity Fairest is great paired with deep purple nail polishes and other matte top coats.

Essie Sugar Daddy Swatch
spoil yourself rotten with a sweet pink. this sheer nail polish is everything you’ve always wanted in a french mani.
First Released: Madison Avenue collection (Spring 2004)
A little bit pinker than Vanity Fairest, Sugar Daddy is not only great for French manis, but also perfect if you’d like to play with a more fun color on spring and summer days without overdoing it.
One coat is enough with Sugar Daddy, although two or three will help show the difference between your sheers, and let the pink color show up more – amazing used with Aruba Blue or other dark Essie colors like Wicked and Licorice!

Essie Eternal Optimist Swatch
the future looks brilliant in warm, spiced rose nail polish. steeped in sunshine, this lacquer serves up a glass that’s always half-full.
First Released: Spring 2009 Collection
A warm tea rose color is what Eternal Optimist offers, and this warm undertone means that it will suits neutral to warm skin tones best – if you’re looking for the cool-toned version of Eternal Optimist, I’ve always felt that it is Lady Like.
Opaque in two coats, Eternal Optimist is a great spring nail color, and saturated just enough that it can easily be worn on the daily.

Essie Clothing Optional Swatch
skin is in. this sumptuous shade of lighter sienna brown nail polish is all the fashion you need.
First Released: Wild Nudes collection (Spring/Summer 2017)
If you’re looking for a kind of nude brown nail polish, Clothing Optional from the Wild Nudes collection offers the perfect mix of brown and mauve – I’ve never really understood exactly which it is.
Opaque in two coats, Clothing Optional feels like the step after Lady Like, which we’ll see right below – by the way, since Clothing Optional and Lady Like are often compared, check out the comparison swatches I’ve already posted.
Anyhoo – Clothing Optional is great for a clean, discrete mani for the fall combined with metallic khaki eyeliner or eyeshadow and matte lipstick!

Muted and Mauve Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie Lady Like Swatch
etiquette, posture, protocol. did we miss anything? oh, yes, this elegant soft mauve nail polish. this dainty color makes for a proper mani.
First Released: Brand New Bag collection (Fall 2011)
The perfect soft mauve nail polish, Lady Like is not that different from Demure Vix, aside from the duochrome effect that Demure Vix gives.
A lacquered, clean, sophisticated nude mauve opaque in two coats – that’s Lady Like, one of the prettiest colors to wear on the daily!

Essie Demure Vix Swatch
walk the line between naughty and nice in compelling cocoa mauve nail polish. hints of iridescence play up your daringly dual nature.
First Released: Summer 2010
Like Ferris of Them All we’ll see further down, Demure Vix (also known as Demure Vixen depending on the country) is one of the only slightly duochrome polishes Essie carries at the moment in the Original range.
This soft mauve nail polish with cool purple/pink shimmer looks incredible on fair skin as well as medium/dark skin, and a kind of elevated everyday color that can be worn all year round.

Essie Chinchilly Swatch
jet set cool. a sleek granite gray nail polish that positively radiates urban chic and subtle sophistication.
First Released: Cuddle with Color collection (Fall 2009)
If you’re ever looking for gorgeous fall or winter Essie nail colors, Chinchilly is one I can’t recommend enough.
Opaque in two coats, it gives that really greige effect that’s been missing from the drugstores’ shelves a bit too much lately, and looks great with muted colors like Dance Til Dawn.

Pink and Purple Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie In Stitches Swatch
this elegantly tailored blush pink nail polish moves seamlessly from day to night and has the neutral nail look all sewn up.
First Released: Fall 2010
In Stitches is a gorgeous fall nail color for whoever is into tea rose nail polish – when compared to Eternal Optimist, In Stitches looks like it’s taking the coral undertone up a notch.
In Stitches is also one of the most muted Essie nail polishes, opaque in two coats and in the same vibe as Clothing Optional or Chinchilly: the kind of color that can just screams autumn, and whose color you never really know how to define in the end.

Essie Mrs Always Right Swatch
nothing like this fierce terracotta rose nail polish to aptly remind him who shares the pants. yes, ma’am.
First Released: Bridal collection (2016)
Mrs Always Right is one of the most statement and most beautiful bridal nail polishes from Essie in my opinion; a soft, muted raspberry that looks great on pretty much any skin tone.
Described as a terracotta rose, Mrs Always Right is opaque in two coats, and since In Stitches and Mrs Always Right are often compared, if you want something on the pinker and a tad darker side, the latter is the one you should go for!

Essie Ferris of Them All Swatch
get ready to feel on top of the world with this muted mauve-plum nail polish with refined copper shimmer.
First Released: Ferris of Them All collection (Summer 2021)
I still remember when I first purchased Ferris of Them All, about a year ago, at a Superdrug store in London.
That’s not the only color I got, though: Buy Me a Cameo and other colors got slipped in my cart at the same time.
One of the only kind of duochrome pink nail polishes Essie carries, Ferris of Them All is a soft berry polish opaque in two coats, with copper shimmer inside that shows up just enough that you can wear the color on the daily.

Essie Angora Cardi Swatch
brush on this lush, deep dusty rose nail polish and you’ll never want to take it off. it’s one stylish sweater for every fashion season.
First Released: Cuddle with Color collection (Fall 2009)
Released back in 2009, Angora Cardi has quickly become one of the best selling colors from Essie, and how could it not be?
This deep mauve, which tickles the burgundy side of the color wheel, is opaque in two coats and gives a creamy fall vibe to any many – Angora Cardi and Lady Like are often compared, so check out my comparison swatch post to choose more accurately!

Essie Island Hopping Swatch
villa today. spa tomorrow. this rich plum mauve nail polish creates a lovely laid-back manicure look that takes you anywhere you want to go.
First Released: It’s Better in the Bahamas collection (Summer 2007)
Island Hopping was, funnily, released in a summer nail polish collection, and a pretty, almost desaturated purple nail polish that belongs perfectly to fall and winter.
Gorgeous with white nail polish, gold or sheer colors like Allure and Limo-Scene, Island Hopping is opaque in two coats.

Light and Dark Red Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie Too Too Hot Swatch
set your heart on fire with this sizzling rich red coral nail polish. how hot is too hot? there’s only one way to find out.
First Released: Brazilliant collection (Summer 2011)
A bright red with strong coral undertones, Too Too Hot is one of the first red Essie nail polishes I’ve ever gotten myself.
Now that I also own Forever Yummy and A-List, I prefer those, with a cooler undertone, but Too Too Hot is still, undoubtedly, one of the best summer nail colors and will brighten up any sad day.
Opaque in two coats, Too Too Hot looks great in nail designs with colors like Marshmallow or Blanc, and can give a pretty awesome result when mixed with similar colors like Cute as a Button, Watermelon or Peach Daiquiri.

Essie Russian Roulette Swatch
A fiery, exciting classic bright red cream polish with subtle orange undertones is sure to turn heads. lady luck was never so lovely.
First Released: ?
Russian Roulette was one of the first red Essie nail polishes I treated myself to last year, along with other nudes, mauves and sheers, and I still love it as much as I did in store – we have here a classic, clean red with very slight orange undertones.
If you’re ever looking for a slightly darker red or something with more blue undertones, A List and Forever Yummy are two others I really love, also opaque in two coats, but Russian Roulette, for a statement red, is a go-to from spring to winter.

Essie Bordeaux Swatch
deep red wine nail polish uncorks an intoxicating mani. everybody’s under the influence of this vintage beauty bottled at chateau gorgeous.
First Released: 1981
One of the many gorgeous burgundy Essie colors, Bordeaux is opaque in three coats, and described as a deep red wine that definitely makes for a go-to during the fall and winter.
Despite its quite dark maroon shade, Bordeaux still allows the red to show through, making it perfect to combine with a dark red eyeliner and a gorgeous nude lipstick like MAC Velvet Teddy or Thanks It’s MAC.

Essie Wicked Swatch
forever stylish. deep sinister red is not for the faint of heart. striking and bold, blood red nail polish creates a sensational nail look.
First Released: 1993
One of the darkest Essie colors, Wicked is also one of my ultimate favorites – ever since I started wearing it, I haven’t been able to stop!
Completely opaque in three coats due to the dark shade, the Wicked nail polish will elevate any day, and looks great with contrasting colors like Light and Fairy (one of the only yellow polishes at Essie!) or the gorgeous coral Cute as a Button.

Yellow, Orange and Warm Brown Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie Playing Koi Swatch
Go bold with essie’s Playing Koi, an orange rust brown nail polish, nail colour & nail lacquerand create the perfect flirtatious and bold at-home manicure.
First Released: Kimono Over collection (Fall 2016)
Where there are very few terracotta nail polishes in the Essie brand, we still have one of the best I’ve ever found; Playing Koi, from the Kimono Over collection released back in 2016.
Opaque in just two coats, this little burnt orange polish makes for one of the best fall Essie colors you’ll find.
Playing Koi and Row with the Flow, shown below, are often compared, but if you’d like a more orange/brownish result, Playing Koi is the one to pick.

Essie Row With the Flow Swatch
relax while you peacefully drift toward your future wearing this warm brown nail polish with red undertones.
First Released: Swoon in the Lagoon (2022)
With more of a yellow undertone to it, and lighter than Playing Koi, Row With the Flow is opaque in just two coats as well, and a really beautiful color to contrast deep burgundy nail polishes like Bordeaux or Wicked.
Really just a perfect fall nail polish, and even more gorgeous if you have warm skin.
Pair it with white or navy blue for contrast, or go with the fall flow by creating designs with Patch It Up, shown below, or deep mauve Angora Cardi.

Green Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie Patch It Up Swatch
put on your headphones and drown out the noise, this creamy olive green vegan nail polish with yellow and black undertones will leave you feeling like nothing else matters.
First Released: Punk at Heart collection (Fall 2024)
One of the latest releases from Essie in the Fall 2024 Punk at Heart collection, Patch It Up is a gorgeous olive green nail polish that is opaque in just two coats, and glides like butter on the nails.
The application process feels exceptional when it comes to Patch It Up, which looks great in combination with fall shades in the same vein like Row With the Flow or Playing Koi.

Essie Meet Me at Midnight Swatch
when the clock strikes twelve, you can find me on the dance floor with this deep olive green vegan nail polish with yellow undertones
First Released: Step Out of Line collection (Fall 2023)
Another fall shade with Meet Me at Midnight, released in the fall 2023 collection.
We have here a deep khaki green with yellow undertones, but not so warm-toned that it might look strange on neutral and olive skin tones.
Opaque in two to three coats, Meet Me at Midnight was a limited edition color, but you can still find it pretty easily online, along with Full Blast and Dance Til Dawn from the same collection.

Essie Off Tropic Swatch
conversations may wander, but never the eyes. this lush grove green nail polish keeps the focus right where it belongs: on you.
First Released: Lounge Lover collection (Spring 2016)
Like Wicked and Licorice, we have with Off Tropic one of the darkest nail polishes from Essie, and one of the most popular shades, released for spring 2016.
Opaque in two to three coats, this gorgeous forest green nail polish looks great with white, mint and gold for statement-yet-sophisticated nail designs, and truly one of the prettiest colors from Essie to this date.

Essie Mint Candy Apple Swatch
essie’s adorable crème de menthe mint nail polish is perfect in any season. don’t be fooled by its sweet exterior, this apple bites back.
First Released: Sweet Time of Year collection (Winter 2009)
One of the only mint green nail polishes currently carried by Essie, Mint Candy Apple is a staple from the brand around spring and summer.
Well, I also think it’s a great winter nail polish, especially when combined with a glazed or shimmery top coat!
Opaque in two to three coats, Mint Candy Apple offers a good balance between green and blue, on a stunning milky base that just makes you want to stare at your nails all day.

Blue Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie You Do Blue Swatch
this adventure is yours for the taking, come as you are in a periwinkle blue nail polish, with violet iridescence and go as you please.
First Released: Flying Solo collection (Spring 2020)
I only have another nail polish from the Flying Solo collection aside from pretty duochrome blue You Do Blue, and that’s Flying Solo – it’s part of the pictures I’ve lost, so I will show it to you as soon as possible.
The perfect periwinkle blue nail polish with soft purple sparkle, You Do Blue is a color I use a lot mixed with both white and black, and the type of color that looks great – and very contrasting – with burgundy nail polishes like Wicked or Bordeaux for nail designs!

Essie Never Too Bold Swatch
step into your rebellious era and make a bold statement in this silver and deep teal metallic vegan nail polish with slight green undertones
First Released: Punk at Heart collection (Fall 2024)
Like Patch It Up, Never Too Bold was released in the Punk at Heart Collection, and I have to admit that as soon as I saw the press release for this collection, I knew I would get it: teal blue nail polish is indeed one of my favorites to wear, ever, wherever, whenever.
Opaque in three coats, Never Too Bold has a formula that’s slightly on the sheerer side, with gorgeous green undertones and stunning silver sparkles inside: gorgeous if you’re looking for statement colors for parties and occasions!

Essie Aruba Blue Swatch
escape to paradise with this frosty sapphire blue nail polish. this vacation in a bottle is an essie salon pedicure favorite.

Aruba Blue is undoubtedly one of the most regal colors we can find at Essie – depending on the country, it’s either available, or has been discontinued, but it’s easy to find online.
Opaque in two coats, Aruba Blue, described as a sapphire blue nail polish, offers a metallic result that is as blinding as it is mesmerizing: a color to love from the spring to the winter!

Metallic and Glitter Essie Nail Polish Swatches
Essie Birthday Girl Swatch
surprise! enjoy this happy, pretty present: an iridescent sheer pink nail polish that makes every birthday more fun.
First Released: ?
Now, there are few metallic and glitter nail polishes at Essie, but if there’s one that you should check out if you like over-the-top looks, it’s Birthday Girl.
Opaque in three coats, this iridescent soft pink looks particularly amazing on fair and medium skin, and really brings life to the party – super long lasting, too, due to the glitter formula!

Essie Buy Me a Cameo Swatch
legends were made in this camera-ready frosted satin mocha nail polish. this glazed neutral assures that, for you, there are no small roles.
First Released: ?
A soft metallic gold color is what we have with Buy Me a Cameo, which is opaque in just two coats and offers sleek sophistication.
There aren’t many true nude Essie nail polishes aside from our classic mauves and sheers, and the odd Eternal Optimist, and Buy Me a Cameo definitely brings something more to the nude range.
Whether you have cool skin, olive or warm skin, this one is just cool-toned enough that pretty much anyone can wear it – the perfect Christmas color from Essie!

Essie Studs & Spikes Swatch
let your goth nails become a statement of defiance with this blackened maroon metallic vegan nail polish with silver, black, and maroon pearl with slight red undertones.
First Released: Punk at Heart collection (Fall 2024)
Like Patch It Up and Never Too Bold, Studs & Spikes is one of the colors released for the Fall 2024 Punk at Heart collection, and one of the most interesting – and glitter nail polishes from Essie.
The color is pretty undefined, although it’s described as a blackened maroon: when I look at it, I see black, purple and grey all rolled into one, and topped with gorgeous silver glitter.
Opaque in three coats, Studs & Spikes is a great statement color and a perfect winter nail polish if you want to tread off the beaten path!

ESSIE NAIL POLISH SWATCH FEST: 30+ Sheer, Nude, Bright and Dark Colors
These are but some of the Essie nail polishes I currently have in my stash – I truly, honestly, cannot wait to swatch all the missing shades I want to show you.
Depending on the country, some colors are discontinued, like Aruba Blue, but you can still find them either online or in other countries, where they are part of the permanent collection.
Hopefully, this list of Essie nail polishes with their release date and collection will have helped trigger motivation to create and have fun with colors!
