Launched in 1982, Ballet Slippers is one of the most popular Essie nail polish colors, and it’s easy to understand why.

Its sheer formula is perfect whether you want to wear one, two, three or four coats – pretty much the magic nude shade that suits many different skin tones and allows you to build up the color should you wish to.

I purchased the Ballet Slippers nail polish a few months ago after taking to sheer nail polish.

A quick look on the Internet showed me various sheer colors from Essie, and this was one I loved at first sight.

And absolutely not the last of my sheer polish crushes, too.

Shown on the swatches throughout this post are four coats, which I did so that you could truly see the undertone and sheerness of Ballet Slippers.

I love that even after four coats, you can still see the nail through the color – it gives a crazy beautiful clean girl aesthetic that I’ve been loving lately.

When I want to wear Ballet Slippers for a manicure that I know I’m going to keep on, two coats are more than enough, and one is perfect for French manis.

If I was at the drugstore again and had to pick a new sheer nail polish from Essie, I’d definitely go towards Ballet Slippers again.

If you’re looking for something a bit less milky and slightly pinker, though, another great option, and one I have been wearing a lot lately, is Essie Not Just a Pretty Face.

The chipping is minimal even after a few days, and I usually don’t even wear top coat – that’s a winner for me.

That jelly, milky nails look I’ve seen going around for a few months definitely has played its part in my splurging on Ballet Slippers.

That super pale pink color applies super easily as long as you shake the bottle before applying, with streakiness only taking place during the first coat.

After that, the formula self-levels beautifully, and stays on like a charm.

I currently own just a little over 25 Essie nail polishes, and Ballet Slippers is one I go for so often that it’s hard to keep track of!
